What is an Electronic Health Record?

First and foremost, an electronic health record (EHR) is a patient’s medical information in digital format.  It can be shared across practices easily, and is generated by an institution or practice such as a medical doctor office, hospital or other practitioner.  Examples of Electronic Health Records include charts, medical notes from visits, billing records, lab results, images, and other recorded forms of information about a person’s medical history.

EHRs are becoming more and more standard in the medical community and will soon be a large part of streamlining health care costs and time.  They will also be able to be tracked more easily and will provide better HIPAA compliance based on the ability to electronically track notations, additions and other viewings
