The HITECH Act of 2009

On February 17th, 2009, the HITECH Act of 2009 was a bill signed by President Obama.  The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) was part of the stimulus package (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) (ARRA) and was designed to encourage the adoption of electronic Health Records (EHRs) through incentive payments to physicians.  The package has designated over $19 billion dollars in stimulus and incentive funds to encourage this adoption

Physicians will be eligible to be paid incentive payments for the meaningful use of EHRs from Medicare starting in 2011.  Depending on your state guidelines, physicians can be paid up to $44,000 for the use of the EHRs.  For physicians being reimbursed by Medicaid, those physicians may be eligible for up to $65,000
